Over the past seven years, Calder has built his pedagogy around floorwork to welcome new and experienced movers alike into his practice. He has shared his workshops with institutions across North America including the School of Toronto Dance Theatre, University of California Santa Barbara, Training Society of Vancouver, Yukon Training Contemporary Community, Coastal City Ballet, Hamilton College, and the Ohio State University. Pulling heavily from his training in Limón modern dance, Bartenieff Fundamentals, and Countertechnique, his teachings are informed by weight, fall and suspension, and compartmentalization of the body.
Training and performing with Shay Kuebler since the summer of 2017, he brings Shay’s ideas surrounding floorwork into the studio and focuses on foundational movements/drills originating in break dance and martial arts to facilitate healthy relationships with gravity. Throughout all his teachings, Calder emphasizes low-stakes learning to demystify floor-based movement modalities and make workshops accessible to a wide range of ages and skill levels.
